New Build Ideas blogger Elizabeth recently spent some time at Buffalo Plumbing Showroom picking our fixtures for her new build and interviewing manager Marcia Olson on the Kohler, Moen and various other kitchen and bath products.
I met Marcia almost ten years ago in a fitness class. She and her twin sister have the most bubbly, magnetic personalities, one can’t help but engage in lengthy conversations with them and laugh a lot. Marcia helped me pick out plumbing, bath fixtures and cabinetry for my second new build master bath. I was overwhelmingly impressed with her knowledge and expertise, and I don’t know what my plumbers would’ve done without her tutelage installing my jetted shower heads. I paid Marcia a visit to look at current kitchen and bath items for new home builds and sat down with her to discuss some questions I have regarding mistakes, overlooks, problems, etc. when purchasing plumbing fixtures. My hope is for anyone reading this blog to become a bit more educated on what to look for and what to avoid when making these purchases for their new home.
ELIZABETH: When dealing with new home build clients, what do you feel they overlook when choosing bathroom and kitchen fixtures?
MARCIA: It is based on each client’s needs, (i.e. a client with small children will need something different than an elderly couple). A lot of people pay more attention to countertops, flooring and tile than faucets and fixtures, which is a mistake. Flooring and tile are larger and create more of a wow factor, however, they don’t have a million moving parts, nor hold water in them, nor get the same kind of wear and tear. For example, people tend to say, “A toilet is just a toilet,” but for an elderly person, a shorter toilet can be more difficult than a standard height toilet. Some overlook bathroom and kitchen faucets and fixtures all together.
ELIZABETH: What is the most important thing about the products that you sell? (I.E. customer service, price, quality)?
MARCIA: Customer service and quality are probably the two big ones, which is why most people come to us. We can work within most client’s budgets, and offer better quality then what is available in big box stores. All our products use more metal and higher brass contents than those of big box stores. Plus, we only carry products lines that are of the highest quality.
Customer service is important to a lot of clients, not only from us in the showroom because we can help them find exactly what they are looking for or need, but also from the manufactures. All our faucets are lifetime warranty and the lines we carry stand behind that. Moen hands down has the best customer service in the industry, and if a customer tells them a faucet broke and they need a part for a party they are having the next day, Moen will overnight the part and help that customer however they can. I find this an important quality to a lot of customers because if they are going to spend money on something they want to guarantee it will last.
ELIZABETH: How should a new home build client approach choosing items for their bathroom and kitchens?
MARCIA: First thing a customer should do is know their layout. You don’t want to be picking out a six-foot tub to later find out your plans can only accommodate a five-foot tub. This is a waste of everyone’s time and energy. Secondly, I’d advise you to search for ideas. Look at pictures on newbuildideas.com, online and in magazines. If you see something you like, note it. That will give us an idea of where to start. We can’t help you if you don’t know what you are looking for. Lastly, have a wish list. You may be able to get everything on your wish list, but even if it’s only a part of what you want, it’s better to start big and then pair down.
ELIZABETH: Do you find that most new build clients are compliant with their builder’s suggestions, or do they choose products on their own? Do you ever persuade clients to think outside of their builder’s box?
MARCIA: I think most clients are disappointed with the allowance/choices the builder has. The builder’s main job is to build, and to build quickly, at the best price possible. Most builders have selected very basic items, and I find a lot of customers wanting more. There are a few places I suggest customers splurging a bit if they can. I always say splurge on the kitchen faucet and sink because it gets the most use. I also suggest upgrading a bit in the powder room, as most guests will use this room. Lastly, indulge on the master bath, because you worked so hard for the house, you should pamper yourself a bit.
ELIZABETH: What would you say is the single most important thing a new home build client should look for when choosing their Kitchen and Bath needs?
MARCIA: Inspiration, even if it is just one item. Whether it is because of the function or look, as long as we have one thing to work off of, we can create a blue print for the perfect space for you!
ELIZABETH: What are some must-have products that you recommend?
MARCIA: There are lots of items I would recommend, but as far as a must have item – hand shower, hand shower, and hand shower! There are so many configurations you can do for faucets in your shower area, but the multipurpose use of a hand shower is invaluable for cleaning. It is also useful for bathing children and pets, it comes in handy to just wash hair, or, if you don’t want to get your hair wet. It is also great for handicapped people. I highly recommend for everyone!
ELIZABETH: What are some kitchen and bath mistakes that could be prevented by working with a professional like yourself?
MARCIA: So many things… missing parts, ordering excess, under ordering, ordering wrong size, disappointment in quality, and not knowing what is fully available. I get so many people coming in after they have built a house or done a remodel and they are so disappointed that they didn’t know about all the products out there.
ELIZABETH: Which is a main goal of New Build Ideas! What are the latest trends in the Kitchen and Bath products?
MARCIA: Freestanding baths, unique faucet finishes (i.e. rose gold, titanium, aged brass, etc.), wall hung/floating vanities, and steam showers.
ELIZABETH: What trends are out of style?
MARCIA: Vessel sinks, Victorian style, framed shower doors (lots of metal), and large built-in whirlpool tubs.
ELIZABETH: Thank you Marcia Olson for answering not only my questions, but the questions of so many other new build clients! You can find Buffalo Plumbing of WNY at the following link: ____________________________________________________________________
As mentioned above, one of New Build Ideas biggest goals is to have a community of new build clients that can use our website as a sharing tool, an educational tool, and for creative ideas when building their dream home. I hope my interview with Marcia from Buffalo Plumbing Showroom was informative and even changed a few minds about buying from a specialty store as opposed to big box stores. Not that we don’t love big box stores, we just want to educate our community on all options available. You just need to keep an open mind and put in the leg work to find the perfect fit for you. Better to do it right the first time than to have regrets after the fact. Happy shopping, and happy building!
