An interview with Nancy from ACE Hardware
Blogger Elizabeth from NBI sat down with an old friend, Nancy, who has been in the Hardware Retail business for countless years. She asked her some building FAQ’s and got some great tips and advice to share with all our NBI community. We hope Nancy’s expertise is helpful throughout your construction decision-making process!
NBI: We get a lot of questions about metal roofing vs. shingles. We know there is quite a price difference between the two, and everyone swears by the lifetime warranty metal roofs offer. Can you shed some light on this decision dilemma?
NANCY: Most people love the idea of having a metal roof instead of shingles, but with a metal roof you’d better be prepared to hear all the noises mother nature provides (rain, sleet, etc.) Nowadays, they make shingles that will last 30 years, and that’s about all you’ll get out of a metal roof. They don’t last forever.
NBI: Why do people like the idea of a metal roof over shingles?
NANCY: Longevity, and they also say metal roofs can increase the resale value of your house, and they are fire resistant. Most metal roof manufacturers have a warranty somewhere between 30-50 years. Metal roofs are pretty costly, therefore, most people go with 30-year architectural shingles, 3 tab.
NBI: Do you recommend any particular roofing?
NANCY: I don’t prefer one over the other, as long as they are architectural, however, I’m sure some roofers have a preference they like to work with.
NBI: We get a lot of inquiries about spray foam insulation. We know this is the newer way to insulate a home, and that there is quite a price difference between the spray and the old, pink insulation that gets rolled in. Can you tell us what you prefer and recommend, and have you had any customers with issues using spray foam vs. “the pink stuff”?
NANCY: I prefer to have the batt, or roll insulation nailed in between the studs rather than have it blown in. If there is ever a problem with electrical or plumbing down the road, it’s much easier to pull the roll insulation out from between the studs, as opposed to having to cut out the blown in insulation.
NBI: We found a very informative website explaining the different kinds of insulation, costs, uses, strengths and weakness for each. Check it out here and be informed before making this huge decision: Insulation Guide
NBI: We get a lot of queries about plumbing. Nowadays, there are so many pipe choices, and plumbers seem to be steering away from traditional copper plumbing. Can you share some knowledge about piping with us?
NANCY: Over the last few years I have seen a lot of my contractor customers converting from copper pipes to PEX.
** [PEX stands for cross-linked polyethylene. It is high density, and used in radiant floor heating and water supply. It has several advantages over all types of metal and plastic piping, including the cost!]
NANCY: I have also seen a lot of contractors using shark bite fittings. With these, there is no need to shut water off and make sure copper pipes are dry to solder. Shark bites are a push lock on fitting.
NBI: We found a very informative website explaining everything you need to know about PEX plumbing. Check it out here and be informed before making this huge decision:
NBI: Check out the website http://www.sharkbite.com/ for more information on these plumbing fittings.
NBI: We’d like your expertise on tools. What are some basic or “staple” tools one needs to own in order to do simple handy-work and maintenance around the home?
NANCY: Every home owner should have a basic set of tools that include a level, a hammer (rubber mallet and claw hammer), screwdrivers (various sizes of Phillips and flathead), pliers, an adjustable wrench, a tape measure, and basic cordless 20v drill. Depending on how handy the home owner is will depend on the variation of tools to buy.
NBI: Older homes never enough outlets. Codes have changed since many older homes were built to include more outlets, GFCI protection, etc. Any advice or tips on installing outlets in a new home build?
NANCY: With technology today, outlets now have USB ports for charging your phone, tablets etc. I would put them in every room in the house!
NBI: Check out this website for electrical codes for each room:
NBI: What’s your opinion on paint with primer in it?
NANCY: I always recommend in new construction homes that all drywall should be primed with primer even though the paint today is paint and primer in one. It is important to seal new hung drywall with primer before you paint. [A little secret: as far as my time in the hardware business, paint has always had primer in it, they just now label the can paint and primer, even though it’s still the same formula!]
Don’t buy cheap paint, as the coverage will disappoint and multiple coats will have to be applied. If you have any imperfections in the drywall (due to the drywaller’s workmanship), never go with a semi-gloss or gloss, as it will show everything. I typically recommend eggshell.
NBI: What do you recommend for primer and paint?
NANCY: In my opinion and with the amount of sales over the years, I would recommend Binz primer, which is made by Zinsser or Kilz. I personally have used both and like the job both products have done.
The best paint I have used is Valspar Optimus. In most applications it is a one coat coverage. Stay away from cheap paints and primers, as they are just that, cheap!!
NBI: Nancy, before we let you go, do you have any other tips for our NBI community you can share with us?
NANCY: If you have multiple entry doors, or even other buildings with locks and dead bolts, make sure you purchase locks that can all be keyed to the same key. It’s much easier to keep track of one key than multiple keys.
NBI: And much easier on your keychain too! Nancy, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with New Build Ideas. We look forward to more input from you in the future.
If any of our NBI readers have hardware questions for Nancy, please comment below or email us at [email protected] We look forward to hearing from you.
